Usher’s New Look Foundation To Host Annual World Leadership Conference

Usher’s New Look Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by Usher Raymond IV, will host the third annual World Leadership Conference in Atlanta, Georgia at Emory University from June 19-22, 2012. The 2012 World Leadership Conference is a three-day initiative that brings together celebrities, influencers, newsmakers and hundreds of accomplished youth from around the world including the U.K., Hong Kong, Kenya and South Africa, with the goal of educating and empowering young people in New Look’s four pillars: talent, education, career and service.

Beginning Wednesday, June 20, 2012, a hand-selected group of the brightest and best New Look youth leaders will participate in New Look’s intensive training program to learn the skills needed to become agents of change in their community. The training will consist of seminars and discussions focusing on public speaking, presentation skills, using your talents to make a difference, and embracing your individuality to build your brand. These New Look youth leaders will use Wednesday’s training as a vehicle to empower, mentor and certify approximately 1,200 Atlanta-based middle school students as leaders on Thursday.

On Friday, June 22, 2012, a select group of New Look youth leaders will take over Atlanta for the day, shadowing top corporate CEOs, including Mayor Kasim Reed, giving them a once in a lifetime opportunity to develop leadership and problem-solving skills in a real world setting. The Conference will conclude with a special concert, “Usher & Friends Unplugged,” which will feature surprise musical guests.

“New Look is about sending the next generation out into the world with the knowledge, experience, and empowerment they need to succeed,” said Usher Raymond IV. “These kids inspire me every day, and our goal with the World Leadership Conference is to give back a little bit of that inspiration.”

“At the conclusion of this year’s World Leadership Conference, we are confident that these New Look youth leaders will be inspired to motivate their peers in their community,” said Shawn H. Wilson, President, Usher’s New Look Foundation. “Throughout the past 13 years, New Look’s programming has been instrumental in shaping the lives of more than 10,000 of the top youth leaders around the world.”

Wu-Tang Clan 101: Mystery of the Illest Rap Group Ever

CHICAGO—KILLA BEES SWARM. Tuesday, May 8, 9:00 p.m. at the Hungry Brain—2319 W. Belmont—Homeroom presents the music, history, and mythology of the Wu-Tang Clan.  Join hosts Fred Sasaki and Seth Vanek, comedian Emerson Dameron, and hip-hop writer Sherron Shabazz for a look at the many hearts of hip-hop royalty.

The leader of the group, RZA, named the band after a kung-fu movie he watched as a child and developed the Wu-Tang philosophy around topics of spirituality, martial arts, capitalism, comic books, chess, organized crime, cinema, and chemistry. Only after the band’s multi-platinum success RZA discovered that the Chinese word “Wu-Tang” means “man who deserves God.” The Wu went from Staten Island rappers to international entrepreneurs to spiritual gurus while creating a lasting, influential universe starring RZA, GZA, Ol’ Dirty Bastard, Method Man, Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, U-God, Inspectah Deck, and Masta Killa—36 chambers of one heart. The whole brought people together of all colors and creeds under one roof, under the W, and this 101 will explore how and why.

The night features clips, DJ sets of hits and deep cuts, plus laughs and deadly venom. Stick around for a screening of the original kung-fu movie that set it off: Shaolin and Wu-Tang by Gordon Liu. $5 suggested. For more information, visit www.homeroomchicago.org

Sex, Spraypaint & Satire: Parody without Humor

We live in a world where nobody talks directly about topics — even when we’re talking directly about them. From sex to race to war, we systematically skirt the real conversations as much as possible for personal and social gain. “Sex, Spraypaint & Satire: Parody without Humor” will explore the dehumanizing nature of our overtly commodified culture. This will be Ray Noland’s first show upon his return from spending the past six months in North Carolina. Hosted by Grand Bizzare — a new gallery in Wicker Park located at 1418 W. Division St. Opening reception Friday, May 18, 2012 from 7pm – 11pm. Doors open at 7pm.

Ray Noland has been an urban art pioneer. Noland is a Chicago native and graduate of the School of the Art Institute. He operates the Creative Rescue Organization (CRO) and works under the same pseudonym. During the 2008 Presidential election, CRO gained national attention with his street art campaign ‘Go Tell Mama!‘ His striking images of Obama appeared throughout Chicago and across the country in the streets and alleyways. The concept was particularly interesting because of its contemporary, urban aesthetic, which proudly defied traditional campaign propaganda and stood apart from the street graffiti most of us are accustomed to seeing.

CRO followed up that campaign with a series entitled ‘Run, Blago Run!‘ As the former Governor of Illinois pleaded his innocence on television, his image started appearing on Chicago buildings. CRO began garnering national attention for his provocative and instantly recognizable imagery.

CRO draws his inspiration from contemporary political discourse. His work is particularly powerful because of the elegant manner in which it depicts serious, complicated and contentious issues, while insightfully critiquing the political culture in which we all live. The visuals are lighthearted, satirical, funny, and contentious all at the same time. All the while, he has maintained an intense focus on local, national and international politics.
